2022, Russia. Successful entrepreneur Gleb lives in a small town with his wife and son. The protagonist’s usual comfortable life is shattered: he begins to suspect his wife of cheating. The plot follows the storyline of Claude Chabrol’s classic film "The Unfaithful Wife," but the backdrop for the family drama is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Gleb is summoned to the city administration and informed: during the mobilization, he must provide the military enlistment office with 14 employees from his company. If this is not done, the military enlistment officer will come himself and take as many people as he wants.
The story of marital infidelity coexists in the film with Russian military realities: on the streets, you can simultaneously see the letter Z and pacifist slogans; footage from Verkhny Lars is endlessly broadcast on the screens of work computers via the Dozhd TV channel, and employees of a successful company are leaving one after another.
"Minotaur" is a film about the difficult moral choices a person is forced to make. The main character finds himself in a tangled labyrinth of fear, jealousy, and pressure. And somewhere inside this labyrinth lives a monster that awaits human sacrifices.
Andrei Zvyagintsev’s new film, "Minotaur," won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar for France.
