Anton Dolin is one of Russia’s most respected film critics. Until recently, he served as a radio host, film reviewer for the popular TV show
Evening Urgant, and editor-in-chief of the magazine
Iskusstvo Kino (
The Art of Cinema).
For the first time in Bali, Anton will present his lecture series,
A Big Conversation About Cinema. What does cinema mean to us, modern-day viewers? Together with Anton, we will explore the social and political influence of cinema today and how it shapes our world and society.
In Ubud, the discussion will center around the themes of "women's" and "men's" cinema. Each year, more and more films worldwide are directed by women. Just a year ago, Greta Gerwig became the highest-grossing director of the year with
Barbie. She later chaired the jury at the Cannes Film Festival, where the Grand Prix went to Payal Kapadia, and the Screenplay Award was won by Coralie Fargeat for the provocative
Substance. Is there a difference between films directed by women and those by men? And if so, what is it? Does the growing gender equality in cinema truly bring new names, themes, and genres into the spotlight?
In Denpasar, Anton will deliver a lecture titled
Cinema of Crisis and Consolation. Political upheavals and the environmental crisis have deeply unsettled us in recent years. COVID-19 was followed by a wave of wars and the erosion of civil rights and freedoms worldwide, pushing many to seek solace in cinema. Yet, films often remind us of our fears: nuclear war (
Oppenheimer), loss and loneliness (
Blitz,
The Boy and the Heron), or religious conflicts (
Dune). Even the upcoming New Year’s release,
Nosferatu, is a grim tale of the triumph of evil. Is escapism a viable and useful response? Can cinema still make viewers happy in a traditional sense, and how can we achieve this joy in the theater?
Additionally, at each event, Anton will introduce his new book,
Bad Russians. This work examines Russian commercial cinema over the past 25 years. Why have characters like Danila Bagrov and Sasha Bely become national heroes in Russia? Are Russian comedies truly as xenophobic as they appear?
After the lecture, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, purchase the book, take photos, and get autographs.
